Substitute Harvey Barnes scored a dramatic stoppage-time equaliser as Leicester City claimed a 2-2 draw away to West Ham on Saturday.
Barnes' first Premier League goal came two minutes into added time, just after it looked like a late strike from West Ham's Lucas Perez, who had also come off the bench, had given the hosts victory.
A frantic finish to the contest came after a relatively quiet opening hour, in which Michail Antonio headed in his fifth top-flight goal of the season as the hosts attempted to bounce back from a three-match losing streak.
The drama began when in-form Jamie Vardy scored his ninth goal in 10 Leicester games to equalise after the break, Barnes ultimately having the last word after Perez had struck eight minutes from time, though the West Ham striker also had what would have been a clinching third goal harshly ruled out for offside.
The reverse fixture in October also ended in a draw, and West Ham have now only won one of their past 10 meetings with the Foxes.
In an uneventful start to the match, Leicester's James Maddison had two efforts saved by Lukasz Fabianski, while Antonio was denied by Kasper Schmeichel.
It was a quality move that led to the breakthrough after 37 minutes, though, as Mark Noble linked up well with Robert Snodgrass before the captain's out-swinging cross from the left was powerfully headed in by Antonio from eight yards.
Leicester equalised in the 67th minute, as Vardy reacted quicker than Fabian Balbuena and diverted Ben Chilwell's left-wing cross past Fabianski with a first-time finish.
Balbuena made a key block from Maddison, who then fired wide from a decent opening as Leicester sought to complete the comeback.
But it was West Ham who appeared to grab victory when a side-footed effort from Pedro Obiang bounced off the post, with Perez reacting sharply to convert the rebound.
Leicester, however, fought back again and - moments after Perez had been denied a second by an offside flag - Youri Tielemans' throughball sent Barnes through, with the 21-year-old coolly placing his finish beyond Fabianski into the far corner.
What does it mean? West Ham's season running out of steam
A draw at least meant West Ham did not make it four consecutive top-flight defeats, which would have matched the dreadful start to the season they made under Manuel Pellegrini. But their campaign continues to run out of steam, and their failure to convert two leads into a victory means a push to rival the likes of Watford and Leicester for seventh is beyond them. They sit 11th in the table, six points adrift of the Hornets having played a game more. Leicester are five points better off, but slip below Javi Gracia's men – who won at Huddersfield Town - into eighth position.
Vardy still producing
Brendan Rodgers has raved about Vardy since arriving from Celtic and it is easy to see why. The former England striker's finish was superb and he also created two chances for his team-mates as his scintillating run of form continues.
7 - Since Brendan Rodgers' first game in charge on March 3rd, Jamie Vardy has scored seven Premier League goals - more than any other player in that time. Revitalised. #WHULEI— OptaJoe (@OptaJoe) April 20, 2019
Gray needs to do more
Demarai Gray got 84 minutes to make an impact for Leicester, but did not have a shot on target or create a single chance for his team-mates. He must be more productive to be a key figure under Rodgers next season.
Key Opta facts
- Only Liverpool (16) and West Ham (15) have gained more points from losing positions in the Premier League than Leicester City this season (14).
- Leicester have both scored and conceded in 13 different away Premier League games this season – no other side has seen both teams score in more on the road in 2018-19.
- Michail Antonio scored his 25th Premier League goal, with 15 of them coming via his head. Of players with at least 25 goals in the competition, only John Terry (66 per cent) has scored a higher percentage of headers than Antonio (60).
- Since the start of last season, Jamie Vardy has scored more Premier League away goals in London than any other player in the competition (seven).
West Ham will look for a first win in five when they have a tough London derby away to Tottenham next Saturday, while Leicester do not play again until they are at home to Arsenal on Monday 29.
