Kizzire survives Fowler charge to win OHL Classic at Mayakoba

13 noviembre 2017 00:20

Patton Kizzire held off Rickie Fowler to win his first PGA Tour event, securing a one-stroke victory at the OHL Classic at Mayakoba.

Kizzire carded a four-under 67 in the final round in Mexico, finishing at 19 under and a shot ahead of Fowler (67).

The 31-year-old American Kizzire made a difficult par on the par-four 18th after hitting his drive near a fairway bunker.

Fowler had just made two straight birdies to get within one shot of the lead, but Kizzire calmly hit his second shot on the green.

Though Kizzire had two runner-up finishes to his name on the PGA Tour, he had never been able to seal the deal previously.

Fowler settled for second place at 18 under, but he made a spirited charge on the back nine, birdieing three of his last six holes.

Making his 2017-18 season debut, Fowler fired four straight rounds in the 60s this week.

The leaders had to play 36 holes Sunday after rain halted most of the third round.

Kim Si-woo, the reigning Players Championship winner, shot a six-under 65 in round four to finish third at 15 under. A double bogey on the par-four 14th derailed his chance to win.

Martin Piller and Charles Howell III tied for fourth at 14 under.
