Betts named American League MVP

Boston Red Sox star Mookie Betts is the American League (AL) MVP.

The Baseball Writers' Association of America named Betts the MVP after he batted .346 with 32 home runs and 30 stolen bases while driving in 80 runs.

He was also an important cog in the machine that sent the Red Sox to their first World Series since 2013.

Betts earned 28 of 30 first-place votes and beat out the Los Angeles Angels' Mike Trout for first place with 410 points.

Trout earned 24 second-place votes and had 265 total points. He also had one first-place vote.

Cleveland Indians third baseman Jose Ramirez finished third with 208 points.

Boston's J.D. Martinez finished fourth and earned the other first-place vote.
