Warrington cling on to beat Wakefield in thriller

21 marzo 2019 23:24

Danny Brough missed a late conversion to force golden-point extra-time as Warrington Wolves clung on for a 34-32 Super League win after Wakefield Trinity mounted a rousing fightback.

Warrington dominated the first half to go in at the break with a 26-6 lead, Toby King, Josh Charnley, Chris Hill and the excellent Blake Austin going over, with Ryan Hampshire crossing for Wakefield.

Stefan Ratchford took his tally with the boot to 12 points early in the second half but Warrington were left frustrated when Jake Mamo had a try contentiously ruled out for the second time in the match.

The game appeared to be over midway through the second half when Charnley finished for a second time after a brilliant break from Austin following David Fifita's try for Chris Chester's side.

Injury-hit Wakefield were not finished yet, though, Kyle Wood claiming a quickfire double before Max Jowitt scored and Brough had a chance to level when Joe Arundel claimed the home side's fifth try of a stunning second half.

Warrington breathed a sigh of relief when Brough's kick sailed just wide of the far post from the left touchline and Wakefield were unable to snatch it despite throwing everything at the Wolves, on a day in which they acquired Belle Vue to set the wheels in motion for redeveloping the ground.

Victory for Warrington moves them level with leaders St Helens, who have a game in hand.
