Super 8s to be scrapped from Super League following vote

14 septiembre 2018 16:30

The Super 8s structure will be ditched from Super League after the 2018 season following the result of a vote at an extraordinary general meeting of the Rugby Football League (RFL) Council.

A more conventional promotion and relegation system will instead be put in place from next year, with the club who finishes bottom of the top tier replaced by one from the Championship.

As part of the restructure, a 12-team Super League will see all involved play 29 fixtures in the regular season, each staging 14 home games plus Magic Weekend.

The top five in the standings will then move forward to the play-offs in the quest to reach the Grand Final.

"We've put the divisions behind us now and we can get on with promoting this great game of ours," Wigan Warriors chairman Ian Lenagan - who led the push for change - said, according to Sky Sports.

Leeds Rhinos were the only member of this year's Super League to vote against the proposal in Manchester, though Lenagan confirmed the plan was approved with a 66 per cent majority.

The identity of the promoted team will be decided following discussions between Championship and League 1 clubs, the RFL revealed in a statement.
