Wigan move top with draw, as Castleford beaten

Wigan Warriors climbed to the top of the Super League despite being denied victory for the first time this season, as Castleford Tigers were beaten by Salford Red Devils.

Castleford headed into Sunday's fixtures at the summit after taking maximum points from their opening four fixtures, but a 16-16 draw for Wigan at home to Huddersfield Giants was enough to see them go top.

It had looked set to be another positive day for Castleford when Luke Gale converted his own try to move 6-0 in front, and they were 12-4 to the good four minutes after the break, when Greg Minikin crossed.

However, Salford showed tremendous resolve to claw their way back into the match, with Ben Murdoch-Masila touching down to set up a dramatic finish.

Having added the extras, Gareth O'Brien levelled the scores with a penalty, before delivering the decisive point by firing over a drop-goal with three minutes left on the clock.

There was little to choose between Wigan and Huddersfield throughout at the DW Stadium, the sides scoring two tries apiece before the interval as the visitors went in 14-10 in front.

Anthony Gelling's try restored parity before Danny Brough nudged Huddersfield ahead with a penalty, but the half-back missed a drop-goal attempt for the Giants after Morgan Escare's two-pointer drew Wigan level for good.
